A Short History of Cigars and Tobacco

Have you ever wondered where cigars were first produced? It is widely believed that cigars were first produced in Spain. But before cigars became all the rage in Europe, tobacco was needed to make them. Tobacco is indigenous to the Americas, where native peoples have produced it for hundreds of years. It is believed that the Maya of Yucatan peninsula in Mexico and parts of Central America cultivated tobacco, and even smoked it! Tobacco use spread to other tribes, both north and south. It is believed that its first use in the United States was probably among the tribe along the Mississippi. It wasn't until Christopher Columbus sailed his famous voyage to the Americas in 1492 that the rest of the world came to know tobacco.

It is said that Columbus was not impressed by tobacco or its use among native peoples, but many sailors grew found of the strange plant. Soon it quickly caught on in Spain and Portugal. From there, it spread to France, where the French ambassador Jean Nicot lent his name to the scientific name for tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum). The origins of the word tobacco itself are still suspect, although many believe it is simply a corruption of the word Tobago, which is the name of a Caribbean island. Still others believe it comes from the word Tabasco, a region (and now state) in Mexico.

The first tobacco plantation in the United States was established in Virginia in 1612. More tobacco plantations followed in Maryland soon after. Although tobacco became a popular crop, it was only smoked in pipes. The cigar was not introduced to the United States until the late 18th century. Israel Putnam, an army general who had served in the Revolutionary War, is credited with introducing the cigar to the United States. He had traveled to Cuba after the Revolutionary War and returned with a box of Cuban cigars. Their popularity quickly spread, and soon enough cigar factories were established in the area of Harford, Connecticut, where General Putnam resided.

In Europe, cigar production and consumption did not achieve widespread popularity until after the Peninsula War in the early 19th century. British and French veterans returned to their homelands after years of serving in Spain with their tobacco pipes in tow. Among the rich and fashionable, the favored method of taking tobacco was the cigar. Cigar smoking remains a habit associated with the rich and discriminating of upper society.

Brief Overview of Cigars

A cigar is a securely rolled package of dried and fermented tobacco, one end which can be lit in order for the smoker to inhale smoke into their mouth or lungs. Cigar tobacco is grown in large amounts in countries such as Brazil, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Mexico, and the USA. Cigars that are made in Cuba are often considered to be the best quality cigar due to the unique tobacco that is only grown in these parts as well as the excellent cigar manufacturers there. Cigars have been smoke by natives of the Caribbean Sea since 900AD.

Christopher Columbus is usually recognized for the person who introduced smoking to Europe after discovering an island of people who smoked cigars.

In the 19th century, smoking cigars was very popular, while cigarettes were very rare. The economy relied heavily on the production and sales of cigar products. The cigar also has a notable part in political history when President JFK put a trade block on US/Cuban trade to try to restrict Fidel Castro's power.

The united states was now forbidden to purchase the finest cigars in the world, which hurt the Cuban economy and also encouraged illegal trafficking of cigars. Today, it is still illegal for Americans to purchase Cuban Cigars, which has resulted in a large inflation in price, as well as many counterfeits being made. The creation of the internet has increased the ability for Americans to purchase cigars online. Enthusiastic cigar smokers consider cigar tasting as some would wine or scotch tasting. Many keep journals and personal records of cigars they have smoke for future reference.

Cigar Smoking Etiquette

Smoking cigars may be a great source of pleasure in your life, but the courteous smoker knows that not everyone enjoys the taste (or smell!) of a good Cuban. With the fervor of anti-smoking campaigns still in full swing, the importance of enjoying a good stogie while not offending others cannot be stressed enough. Different types of Cigars

Different Types of Cigars

The Origin

Cigars have generated much interest and passion, not only in their countries of origin but even more so in Europe and the United States. However, available historical references indicate that inhabitants of Europe were pretty much unaware of tobacco until after Columbus's epic voyage of 1492.

Cigars, as we know them today, were first made in Spain in the early 18th century, using Cuban tobacco. By 1790, cigar manufacture had spread substantially and small factories were being set up in France and Germany. However, cigar smoking became a recognized, widespread custom in France and Britain only after the Peninsular War that ended in 1814, when returning British and French veterans made cigar smoking, a habit they had acquired while serving in Spain, something of a fashion statement.

The cigar arrived in North America a little earlier than Europe, around 1762, when Israel Putnam, later a general in the American War of Independence, returned from Cuba, where he had served in the British army. He came back to his home in Connecticut with a selection of Havana cigars and large amounts of Cuban tobacco seed. Cigar factories were later set up in the area, processing the tobacco grown from the Cuban seed.

A Closer Look at the Cigar and its Different Types

Just like wine, there is much curiosity about cigars even amongst those who don't smoke. An important lifestyle product, the cigar has grown from being merely a smoking option to a true statement of style.

This article talks about all you need to know about the different types of cigars and the components that make a cigar and decide its quality.

The Structure of the Cigar

A Cigar has its three different parts that make it up: Filler, Binder and Wrapper.

The Filler: It is the filler that provides a cigar its essential flavor. There are three different types of leaves that are popularly used as fillers for cigars. These are Ligero, Seco and Volado.

The Binder: The binder is what encloses the filler and gives the cigar its proper shape and size. The bottom part of the plant where the leaves are thicker and have more strength is used as a binder for cigars.

The Wrapper: As the name suggests, the wrapper is the outermost covering of a cigar. Because its appearance is especially important, the quality of the wrapper is considered crucial and generally, can account for up to 70 percent of the value of the tobacco. It is said that a good wrapper should have the requisite flavor and steady-burning qualities essential for a truly great cigar smoking experience. Smokers examine a cigar for appealing appearance, texture and aroma, and this is where a good, painstakingly grown wrapper justifies the high cost of the cigar.

Different Types of Cigars

From a few local brands to tens of premium brands, cigars today, offer a number of options to choose from. Have a look at some of the best known cigar brands:

Cuban Cigars: Cuban cigars, considered to be one of the best cigars in the world, are also the most popular. It is said that their production is rarely ever able to match up to their demand! Also called Habanos, Cuban cigars are controlled by a government corporation, and demand much attention to detail from the cigar maker. Habanos need to be handled very carefully and call for a high level of monitoring for quality.

Macanudo Cigars: Macanudo was introduced in 1971 by the General Cigar Company and quickly became a leading premium cigar. Every Macanudo cigar is made with the finest Connecticut Shade wrapper, a flavorful blend of Dominican tobaccos and a select binder grown in the rich St. Andres Tuxtla Valley of Mexico. Each Macanudo can be relied on for consistency in smoothness and the same superior smooth taste and quality of experience.

Cohiba Cigars: The Cohiba came into into existence in 1966, but it was only in 1969 that it became famous. The tobacco used for manufacturing Cohiba Cigars is grown at full length in certain selected plantations in the province of Penar del Rio, and is considered quite special.

Padron Cigars: The manufacturing of Padron Cigars started in 1964 in Florida, the man behind the brand being Jose O. Padron. Padron Cigars use only sun-grown habano aged for a minimum of two and half years, and are available in natural and maduro wrappers. One of the finest cigars, Padrons are known as full-bodied and well-aged cigars.

Partagas Cigars: Though Don Jaime Partagas is the founder of Partagas cigars, it is the efforts of sons Ramon Cifuentes and Jaime Partagas Jr. that made Partagas cigars the leading Cuban Cigar. Partagas Cigars, known for their rich flavor, use high quality wrappers from Cameroon, known for its perfectly suitable climate for growing superb wrapper leaves.

Ashton Cigars: Ashton Cigars are produced using 3 to 4 year old Dominician tobacco, and get their rich taste from the golden Connecticut shade wrapper.

Acid Cigars: Made in Nicargua in Drew Estate by Jonathan Drew, Acid Cigars have a completely natural composition. They are prepared using the finest tobaccos and over 140 botanicals, herbs and essential oils. Acid Cigars are known to be the leader in the herbal and Botanical Aromatic Cigar Market.

Montecristo Cigars: Montecristo cigars, the famous Havana brands started becoming popular around the late 1930's. Popularized also by the Alexandre Dumas' 1844 novel Le Comte de Monte Cristo, the cigar is a medium to full bodied one with a sweet aroma and impeccable construction.

Arturo Fuente Cigars: Arturo Fuente learned the art of making premium, handmade cigars in Cuba at the end of the 19th century, and started producing his own line in 1912. The highest quality vintage tobacco is used for Arturo Fuente Cigars. The leaves are carefully selected from a private reserve and set aside for making these cigars. These are also known as one of the famous aromatic cigars.

The 2006-2011 World Outlook for Wood Jewelry Boxes, Silverware Chests, Instrument Cases, Cigar and Cigarette Boxes, Microscope Cases, Tool or Utility Cases, and Similar Boxes, Cases, and Chests

The 2006-2011 World Outlook for Wood Jewelry Boxes, Silverware Chests, Instrument Cases, Cigar and Cigarette Boxes, Microscope Cases, Tool or Utility Cases, and Similar Boxes, Cases, and Chests
WHAT IS LATENT DEMAND AND THE P.I.E.?

The concept of latent demand is rather subtle. The term latent typically refers to something that is dormant, not observable, or not yet realized. Demand is the notion of an economic quantity that a target population or market requires under different assumptions of price, quality, and distribution, among other factors. Latent demand, therefore, is commonly defined by economists as the industry earnings of a market when that market becomes accessible and attractive to serve by competing firms. It is a measure, therefore, of potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) or total revenues (not profit) if a market is served in an efficient manner. It is typically expressed as the total revenues potentially extracted by firms. The market is defined at a given level in the value chain. There can be latent demand at the retail level, at the wholesale level, the manufacturing level, and the raw materials level (the P.I.E. of higher levels of the value chain being always smaller than the P.I.E. of levels at lower levels of the same value chain, assuming all levels maintain minimum profitability).

The latent demand for wood jewelry boxes, silverware chests, instrument cases, cigar and cigarette boxes, microscope cases, tool or utility cases, and similar boxes, cases, and chests is not actual or historic sales. Nor is latent demand future sales. In fact, latent demand can be lower either lower or higher than actual sales if a market is inefficient (i.e., not representative of relatively competitive levels). Inefficiencies arise from a number of factors, including the lack of international openness, cultural barriers to consumption, regulations, and cartel-like behavior on the part of firms. In general, however, latent demand is typically larger than actual sales in a country market.

For reasons discussed later, this report does not consider the notion of unit quantities, only total latent revenu

The History of Davidoff Cigars

Davidoff is a byword for quality and style throughout the world. It encompasses men's fragrances, ties, glasses, congac, humidors, and briefcases, but it is based upon cigars. To build a multi-million dollar business in the 20th century on a tobacco product is a truly remarkable achievement. Inspired by Zino Davidoff this companies products have become a must have for affluent men around the world.

The life story of Zino Davidoff reads like a history of the Twentieth Century. Zino was born in Kiev in 1906, his family fled the pogroms to settle in Geneva and opened a tobacco shop where Lenin was a customer. Zino traveled to the tobacco lands of Central and South America at a young age, eventually ending up in Cuba, for which he grew a life long affection. By 1947 he had created his Chateau Selection based on Cuban Hoyo de Montgomery cabinets. In 1969 Zino Davidoff was granted the accolade from the Cuban industry of Havana brand.

In 1970, Ernst Schneider, a Swiss importer, became interested in Davidoff's brand. Seeing the potential the brand had Schneider, with the help of Cubatabaco's help, developed the brand into a worldwide success. There were three series of Davidoff Havanas, all with a distinctive flavor all to their own, the fullest being the Chateau, the lightest being the Dom Perignon No. 1, No. 2, and the Ambassadrice. They also offered a medium tasting cigar, the Thousand Series.

It is truly a shame that these cigars are no longer available. Because of a dispute between Cubatobaco and Oettinger the production of Davidoffs in Havana ceased in March of 1990 and the brand moved it's operation to the Dominican Republic.

Rather than try to recreate the flavorsof their former cigars they instead set out to raise the bar when it came to what people expect of a Dominican Cigar.

Domincan Davidoffs, dressed in their own claro Conneticut wrappers, are immaculately tailored. Replacing the Chateau range is the "Grand Cru" range by offering a the richest flavor of all Davidoff cigars. The No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, and the Ambassadriceare as delicately mild as you can get, and the Thousand Series ("Mille") have a mild flavor, though not as mild as the others. There are also the Davidoff Special Selection of heavy girth cigars, including the Davidoff Special R (Robusto), the Davidoff Special T (Piramides), and the Davidoff Double R (Double Carona).

Poker and Cigars - Together Forever?

At one time those who sat at a poker table considered cigars and poker as part of the same package. They freely puffed on their cigars as they rolled their hands over their piles of poker chips. Men skilled at the game of Texas Hold'em were usually equally skilled at the art of lighting and maintaining a smoking cigar. The cigar enthusiasts at BuyDominicanCigars.com mourn the day in age when this scene was easy to find. Many of us think this pastime may become a thing of the past unless the current trend is reversed.

At the dawn of the last century, and for a period that lasted until well into that century, all manner of gambling establishments were populated by cigar smokers. Blackjack tables, as well as poker tables had rings of cigar smoke floating above them.

A host at a poker game or at a game of blackjack might be called on to provide an implement for the cutting of one or more cigars. Such hosts needed to furnish guests with more than poker chips and a pack of cards. They also had to provide their guests with plenty of cigar ashtrays. Preparations for a long poker or blackjack game demanded more than just the accumulation of drink and snack foods. Such preparations also included the purchase of extra butane lighters.

Now however at the start of the 21st century things have changed. Now the city and state rules and regulations have called for a ban on the use of cigars at a game of Texas Hold'em. In fact, if one now walks into a gambling casino one cannot find a single soul puffing on a cigar. There may be cigar smokers at such establishments, but they no longer feel free to smoke while they play poker. A visit to Hollywood Park in Inglewood, CA uncovers the confined area into which the cigar and cigarette smokers have been moved. It is a small room in the corner of a larger room. It usually contains several small chairs and one large chair. That large chair has the ability to provide someone with a message.

Customers just slip a quarter into the arm of the chair and then sit back for five minutes. Then the frustrations that those same customers might have felt at not being able to smoke a cigar while playing poker are apt to disappear. And of course one is free to smoke a cigar or a cigarette is this same room. Because the smokers are unable to busy themselves with the playing of poker or blackjack, these rooms frequently have on the walls some interesting posters. Since Inglewood is located close to the Filmmaking capital of the world, most of the posters focus on early Hollywood and the early entertainers.

Even if one has no interest in smoking a cigar, and even if one has no desire to get a message, still it is fun to examine those posters. A close examination might allow one to find the picture of Kirk Douglas when he was just a young man. One could look at that picture and appreciate why he became such a star. One might also wonder what he would say now regarding the current rules, rules that prohibit the once accepted combination of cigars and poker.

First, note the texture of the cigar. Squeeze it gently. Is very soft, or rigid? Ideally, the cigar should give slightly, but not too much. Very gently, squeeze the length of the cigar to check for lumps. A good cigar will have a consistent texture.

Next, inspect the cigar for flaws. Any cracks or discolorations are the signs of a lower quality cigar. The cigar's Punch Cigars wrapper should be wrapped smoothly.

Finally, look at the ends of the cigar. Pay particular attention to the exposed Smoking Pill Smoking Ribs end where cigar is lit. If you're new to cigars, it can be difficult to gauge the quality of the tobacco. The simplest way to judge the tobacco quality of a cigar is to inspect the color Smoking While Pregnant of Smoking Celebs the tobacco.
